Sister's Prayer Areas & Activities

Two prayer areas

Because we want everyone to feel welcome at our center, we have helped arrange two prayer areas for women:

Main Prayer Area

Elderly women or those women WITHOUT accompanying children are welcome to pray in the main prayer area.

  • It is handicap accessible.

  • There is a separate entrance for women along with a partition provided within the main hall.

Upstairs Prayer Area

Women with children accompanying them are encouraged to pray in the upstairs prayer area.

  • There are also two rooms available for babysitting and youth activities.

  • There are three cameras connected to a TV in the women's area to be able to see the imam and congregation praying downstairs.

Halaqahs & Social Gatherings

Occasional gatherings are held for all Muslim women at GLIC. Women gather to learn Qu'ran, tafseer, etc. Social activities are held to provide structured and emotionally intelligent support to both converts and sisters who have been Muslim for a while. The schedule depends on the season. Contact Sr. Sakinah(502-5108599) for more info and latest schedule.

Dawah & Outreach Activities

Annual Louisville Quran Competition

Every Ramadan, all the mosques join together to hold a community-wide Quran recitation competition for the youth. Each mosque holds their own qualification round and the finals of the competition are frequently held at our center.

To celebrate every Eid, there are many events that take place across the city, in collaboration with various mosques:

1. Large congregational prayer on the morning of Eid
2. Early prayer at GLIC for those who can't attend the large congregational prayer
3. Eid carnival in the evening, usually at GLIC or MCC
For up to date information each Eid, please follow us on Facebook.

Eid Prayers

Ramadan Community Iftars

Every Ramadan, we host limited iftars where families can gather and celebrate in the mosque.  Due to shortage of volunteers and masjid cleanliness, we limit the gathering to certain days only. We support multiple local businesses to provide a variety of delicious Halal food during community iftar.

Sponsorship

As Ramadan gets closer, be on the lookout for communication regarding sponsoring a day or partial day of the community iftar.

Guests are welcome to our mosque anytime, however we hold a special open house every year, in which the community is invited to come "meet your Muslim neighbor." Our event is advertised widely in newspapers and through social media.
A typical Open Mosque Day includes:

  • Guided mosque tour

  • Presentation on the basics of Islam

  • Q&A session about Islam

  • Listening to Quran recitation and the adhan (call to prayer)

  • Watching a typical congregational prayer

  • Eating ethnic food with local Muslims

  • Other: get your name written in Arabic calligraphy, have artistic henna done, try on a hijab, win raffle prizes

Annual Open Mosque Day

We set up outreach booths during the Kentucky State Fair, WorldFest and other local festivals. At these booths we provide free introductory materials on Islam, including free translations of the Quran in English, provided by Al-Furqan Project (with Imam Eesaa Wood). We encourage attendees to interact with us and "ask a Muslim a question" to help dispel misconceptions about Muslims. We have had positive press coverage with this initiative, which you can watch here: Daniel Paxton/WAVE 3 News
